​Volunteer 

SCRAPS (Stray Cat Rescue and Protection Society) in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, is a valuable organization dedicated to the rescue, care, and rehoming of stray and abandoned cats. The organization relies heavily on volunteers to carry out its mission and there are a variety of ways for people to get involved:

1. Foster Care:

- Short-term Fostering: Provide temporary housing for cats and kittens until they are adopted. This role involves feeding, socializing, and caring for the animals.

- Medical Fostering: Care for cats with special medical needs, which may include administering medication and attending veterinary appointments.

2. Adoption Events:

- Event Planning and Coordination: Help organize and set up events to promote cat adoptions.

3. Volunteer at 9-Lives Boutique:

- Provide customer service in the 9-Lives Boutique in 2 to 3 hour shifts
- Accept payments and donations, provide information about SCRAPS
- Depending on the shift, there may be some cat care and cleaning 

4. Fundraising:

- Organize Fundraisers: Plan and execute fundraising events such as markets, auctions, or community garage sales.

- Sponsorship Coordination: Reach out to local businesses and individuals to secure donations and sponsorships for SCRAPS, whether in the form of money, supplies, or services.

- Assist with Recycling: Help collect, sort, and deliver refundable bottles and cans to Sarcan to support SCRAPS' fundraising efforts.

 

5. Outreach and Education:

- Social Media Management: Help manage SCRAPS’ online presence by creating content for social media platforms to promote cat adoption, fundraising events, and volunteer opportunities as well as website maintenance.

 

6. Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) Program:

- Trapping: Assist in humanely trapping stray and feral cats for spay/neuter and medical treatment.

- Post-Surgery Care: Provide post-surgery recovery spots for cats until they can be safely returned to their colonies.

- Data Collection: Maintain records of cats that have been trapped, treated, and released.

 

7. Cat Care:

- Daily Care and Feeding: Participate in daily feeding, cleaning, and general care of cats housed at SCRAPS facilities or foster homes.

- Socialization: Spend time with the cats to socialize them, making them more adoptable. This can include playing, grooming,

and simply offering companionship to shy or traumatized cats.

 

8. Transport:

- Veterinary Visits: Provide transportation for cats to veterinary appointments for routine check-ups, vaccinations, and surgeries.

- Event Transport: Help transport cats to and from adoption events or foster homes. This ensures the animals are safe and comfortable during their journeys.

 

9. Administrative Support:

- Clerical Work: Assist with tasks such as data entry, filing adoption paperwork, and maintaining records.

- Telephone and Email Support: Answer inquiries from the public about adoptions, volunteering, or other organizational matters.

 

10. Photography and Marketing:

- Photography: Take high-quality photos of the cats to be used on the website and social media to help with adoptions.

- Graphic Design: Create promotional materials such as flyers, brochures, and online graphics to spread the word about SCRAPS and its mission. Visual content can significantly enhance SCRAPS' ability to reach potential adopters and donors.

 

11. Volunteer Coordination:

- Recruitment and Training: Help recruit new volunteers, conduct orientation sessions, and provide ongoing training and support to ensure they are well-prepared for their roles.

- Scheduling: Organize and manage volunteer schedules to ensure all shifts and tasks are adequately covered.

 

Each of these roles plays a crucial part in the overall success of SCRAPS. Volunteers can choose areas that match their interests, skills, and availability, ensuring a fulfilling experience while making a positive impact on the lives of homeless cats in Moose Jaw. Joining as a volunteer not only helps the cats but also fosters a sense of community and purpose among those who participate.
